Well, I'm ready to talk about my involvement in this exploitation.
A friend, a younger cat in the weed game in the Bay Area, reached out to me to see if I wanted to talk to a guy who was getting ready to make a documentary about growing cannabis in the early 90s. He had told the guy he knew some who had been involved back then & would reach to them (me) to see if I would be willing to talk. I had just finished a brutal year of growing hundreds of acres of USDA Farm Bill Hemp in Ventura County, which was 2019, the year of the CBD extract price drop (which, to be honest, I had seen coming, but I was desperately trying to make up for the wildfire losses of 2017-2018).
I had the guy call me, the first question he asked me took me back to a bit of nostalgic hearsay I could never forget.
"Have you ever heard of a Bigfoot murdering people on a cannabis grow in Northern California?"
I didn't miss a beat, the question caused an immediate response,
"SpyRock, 93'!"
There was a pause, then a reply,
"Would you be willing to be interviewed on camera, I can pay you for your time."
I agreed to meet with them, turned out I knew the director, Josh Rophe, from some years prior in Los Angeles, as the film biz had always been a decent side hustle for me over the years.
I did the interview, I think it was for around $750, they brought a crew out to my desert hideout & I tried to give answers that were as honest as I could be, without getting myself locked up again or causing anyone else any harm.
I also saw it as an opportunity to maybe share my perspective & experience on what it had been like to be there, growing, harvesting, curing & distributing cannabis at the height of the interdiction efforts by myriad political & militaristic forces in a place that was as awe inspiring as the Emerald Triangle of those days.
I brought in two of my friends & mentors, Christopher Deinstag & Michael GhostDance. Between the 3 of us there was well over a century of cannabis experience to be shared.
Still, it was show biz, & I don't think I fared too well in the editing process & if you watch the guy on his Joe Rogan interview you can see he just lumps me in with all the other 'criminals' he has made into stories prior to this one. I was just part of his shtick.
I have only watched it once, but I do recall that I got to inject some good information & so did Chris & Miguel.
It has almost been 2 years since the thing came out, on 4/20/21 of all days.
I am sure it will be entertaining on some level, maybe even informative, but also with the caveat that it is exploitive, in my opinion, & does distort who I am for the sake of making the story more salacious.
